Why “Indulging” Yourself Can Be Healthy

| More

I’ve just come across some very exciting research that proves how important your “mindset” is when it comes to losing weight.

You’ll be surprised at the amount of control you have over your body and how it responds to food…

The Battle of the Bulge and the Mind-Body Connection

This study was recently published in the online journal, Health Psychology.

A team of researchers at Yale University decided to see how ghrelin, the “hunger” hormone, responds to mental perception[1].

Just so we’re on the same page, ghrelin is known as the “hunger” hormone because it’s responsible for sending a signal to your brain that causes it to “want” more food.

When your body’s ghrelin levels are high, the signal gets stronger – creating a tendency to overeat, even if you’re already pretty full.

Similarly, when ghrelin levels are low, we feel satiated and don’t feel the need to eat anymore.

Your ghrelin levels will typically increase before a meal and decrease after you’ve eaten.

Indulging vs. Being Sensible

The Yale research team divided study participants into two groups.

Group one was given a 380 calorie milk shake. However, here’s the twist:

They were told it was, in fact, a 620-calorie “indulgent” shake.

Group two was given the exact same milkshake (380 calories) that group one received. They were told it was a 140-calorie “sensible” shake.

After drinking the shakes, both groups’ ghrelin levels were measured.

Can you guess what happened?

The folks in group one – the ones who thought they were drinking the “fatty,” 620 calorie indulgent shake – had a dramatically steep decline in ghrelin levels after drinking it.

Those in group two who thought they were drinking a low-calorie sensible shake had a neutral ghrelin response. Their levels stayed pretty much the same… meaning their feeling of satiety did not increase.

Here’s the cool part: The actual ghrelin response that took place in the participants’ bodies reflected exactly what would have taken place if the calorie counts in the shakes had in fact been as high – or as low – as the researchers claimed them to be.

All that changed here was the participants’ perception of the shakes they were drinking.

“This study shows that mindset can affect feelings of physical satiety,” said Alia Crum, the study’s lead author. “The brain was tricked into either feeling full or feeling unsatisfied. That feeling depended on what people believed they were consuming, rather than what they actually were consuming.”

“What was most interesting,” Crum added, “is that the results were somewhat counterintuitive. Consuming the shake thinking it was ‘indulgent’ was healthier than thinking it was ‘sensible.’ It led to a sharper reduction in ghrelin.”

Think and Grow Thin?

It always floors me that the majority of people will try everything under the sun to lose weight – pills… extreme fad diets… potions… exercise gizmos… laser fat removal…

It isn’t until they’ve tried everything that they turn to hypnosis. That’s because changing their minds becomes the last thing they ever think of – it’s often the last resort.

Ironically, changing your mind should be the FIRST thing on the list to try. After all, external fixes only attempt to remedy the symptoms. They don’t address the root cause.

That’s why focusing on your mind, your habits, and your beliefs about a healthy lifestyle are so powerful at creating effective, powerful and long-lasting change.

And this study further proves how critical this piece of the weight-loss puzzle can be to your success.

Think about it: Ghrelin is responsible for those irresistible cravings you get. It takes part in making you hungry. As a result, it causes you to overeat. The excess calories then get stored as fat.

And thanks to the researchers at Yale, we’ve just learned that we can control (to a large extent) this entire process just by changing our minds and thoughts about the things we eat.

So, if we can use our minds to make ourselves “think” we’re being indulgent… we can actually be healthier.

Can you imagine how much frustration, time and money would be saved if most folks started their weight loss journeys by first addressing that thing between their ears?

I’d love to hear what you think. Let’s get a discussion going here and I’ll make sure to respond below in the comments section.

This is simply CRAZY!  Who would have thought?  So how do I fool myself into thinking my broccoli is high in fat.  Indulgent vegetables would be a great concept!  I have been using Dr. Temes Hypnosis CDs for the last month and have found it is far easier to eat my veggies and stay away from sweets.  I hope I am not raising my ghrelin levels.  But maybe the fact that she makes it so I enjoy my veggies has the same effect as them being “indulgent”?

  • http://www.exploringthemind.com Michael Lovitch

That is a great question!  Glad the CDs are helping though.  Since the program does cause you to “Crave” water, veggies and other healthy stuff it may just do that, but I would not be able to verify this.  It would be an interesting idea to somehow incorporate this research into our next program somehow.

For those who don’t know what we are talking about.  It is a program Dr. Roberta Temes created for us that helps people lose weight and it is highly effective.

Wonderful research and even better news….I just started my hypnosis CDs this week so I look forward to permanently changing my beliefs and habits about food to achieve permanent weight loss…Off to a good start :)

  • Liam

That is quite amazing! It just goes to show – by proof – just how powerful our brain is. So, tell me how can I use hypnosis to eliminate my one and only addiction – chocolate?

  • Cheri H

Now that I’ve read this, I won’t feel so bad about eating my 600 calorie bowl of oatmeal!  Really, it is amazing how the mind controls so many physical aspects of our bodies.  I’m going to start listening to Dr. Roberta’s CD’s again as I’ve seemed to have slipped back into consuming too many of those 50 calorie candy bars.  The CD’s definetly reduced my craving for sweets the first time and helped me lose a significant amount of weight.  It’s been about 18 months and bad habits are starting to creep back in but that’s why having the CD”S handy is so great.

  • Katforsure

That’s cool and I totally believe it, but I do have to say … if I ate only because of hunger, I wouldn’t be fat.  Hunger is only a very small part of the overeating equation.

  • http://www.exploringthemind.com Michael Lovitch

    Hi Cheri,

I also listen to the “temptation” session as a refresher about once every 4-5
months.  Refreshers are good, I am now refreshing with our productivity program because I have lots of work to do:)

  • http://www.exploringthemind.com Michael Lovitch

    Keep us posted

  • RhodiesRus

I tried hypnosis in the  past and had weight GAIN!  I could hear in my head that I don’t like people telling me what to do and I do just the opposite even though I would love to loose about 30 pounds.  As it is now I hardly ever “FEEL hungry” I just eat as the clock says it is lunch, dinner, whatever.  I am trying the CD now but finding the same thing happening.  so now what?

  • Mindful

I heard this once before….I believe it after using hypnosis successfully and
surprisingly.  Having people you deeply care about “loving” you through feeding you
food has been my biggest issue.  Very difficult for me to say, thanks, but I’m full enough,
or “it looks wonderful, but I’m trying to watch my weight” or other things that come to
mind.  I feel that incredible powerful urge to please others before myself and that is
difficult to this day.  Easier, with practice but years of conditioning is difficult to
let go of.  The mind again….

Try finding a hypnosis CD on weight gain?  You could also try getting rid of most of the clocks in your house, or tape over the displays, so you’re not eating because you’re “supposed” to.  Of course, this only works if you live alone, or if the people you live with cooperate.  One of the best authors I’ve read on the subject is Geneen Roth, but it’s harder to implement when there are other people involved.

  • http://www.exploringthemind.com Michael Lovitch

    Hi!

Two things.  One – hypnosis might not be for you.  This program works for a bit over 9 out of 10 people.  There are certain folks who it just does not help.  It is not your fault – there just might not be a match.

    Or

Sounds like there is a part of you that is really resistant to any instruction or suggestion.  Its job is to protect you.  When this happens, you might ask what it is protecting you from (probably something from your past) listen to it and promise that these suggestions are safe and are going to protect your health in the long run

    I hope this helps

  • RhodiesRus

I will give that a try.  I think you hit the nail on the head when you said something from my past.  I was sexually assaulted as a young girl and the guy did do some pretty heavy mind stuff.

  • RhodiesRus

    AMEN!!!  Comfort food extraordinaire!

  • Charles Guess001

My problem would be how to start my brain to do this kind of thinking. Do you or anyone have any suggestions as to how to adjust perceptions or thinking

  • http://www.exploringthemind.com Michael Lovitch

    Hi again.

For these guys of issues, I can’t suggest strongly enough that you find a licensed therapist who specializes in these issues.  Forget hypnosis or home use programs. It is much better to find someone qualified who can work with you one on one.  And stay away from people promising you miracles or asking you to believe in things that challenge rational thought.

Thanks for suggestion!  do that with my yoga will try it more often ;-)

Does anyone know how insulin is connected to ghrelin as insulin levels also affect hunger . Do they affect each other?

  • Emma B

What an amazing study! I have listened to Dr Roberta and found her very helpful. I also try and make my veggies “indulgent” so I feel I have had a real treat: panfrying brussel sprouts in a little butter and pancetta, steaming broccoli with some toasted almond flakes and garlic etc. And really sitting down to enjoy a snack of raw nuts like it’s a special treat equivalent to going out for icecream. It’s incredible to think it’s all within us – no pills or powders required!

  • D. Hickman

Control an addition to chocolate, yes. Eliminate it? Never!

  • Sandi

Hi, so how do we get our brains to think that a food is indulgent when we know that it is not?

  • Thomas L. Goff

Thank you for this information.  I have been a long standing advocate for Kinesiology and Alphabiotic therapies.  What you have just written goes alongwith my knowledge and experience of  the brain working with the body and the left and right brain phenomenon.  Also, affecting memories of past occurrances are held in the body and the mind accepts them as normal.  The solution is to find these errant status quo points that were affected by errant memories, go through therapy that keeps releasing them and telling the mind this is normal, then, the mind and body can get in sync and work together as it was originally intended.  In the case of weight lost, both the mind hypnosis and the touch therapies of Kinesiology would be an excellent combination.

  • Kjshare

I agree, I was a sz 8 until I started the Adkins diet…I was on it for 3 months and lost only 7lbs.
After getting off and eating normal amounts of carbs again…I gained…30lbs.!!!!! This is the truth. I am in a sz 14 and can’t lose weight no matter what I try. I think my mind is telling me that I am doing bad things when I eat carbs at all….never had a problem before….yikes….what to do now?

You can change your mind about what chocolate you like, change to good quality very dark chocolate and appreciate how dense it is.. this is what I do with the cholcoholics who come to me for treatment.

Heh, weird… This article explains what I’m experiencing… it’s something I’ve actually done myself without even realizing it, guess it just came naturally… I switched from more processed, fatty and unhealthy foods to a diet of mostly fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, fish & poultry, whole grains like brown rice, trying to cut back on dairy with almond milk etc. I didn’t read any books or anything, just came up with my own recipes like lightly sauteed veggies with brown rice & ginger garlic soy sauce… or diced tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, minced garlic, sea salt, apple cider vinegar, black pepper and a sprinkling of Parmesan.  Meals like that I see as highly indulgent, even though it’s all good wholesome food, and all homemade.

Only part of it for me was losing weight, I was focused less on weight and more on maintaining and building muscle and trying to eat more fresh and natural, not foods loaded with toxins etc. As a result of eating like this for about 2 months, I dropped to my all time lowest (goal) weight of 120 lb at 5’8 without hardly trying or even noticing. Whenever I cook something (I love to cook good food) it always feels like an indulgence, especially if I don’t calculate the exact calories (sometimes hard to do with fresh raw food), and on times like those I feel particularly satisfied with both myself and my food. Now, my weight has always fluctuated wildly, highest ever was 198 or more back for a year when I was in highschool, after the initial weightloss jump I yo-yoed between 140 and 170 for years, I’ve never seen less than 135 on the scale since I was like, maybe 13 or 14? But now that I’m at my lightest, with amazing muscle definition, it feels like I didn’t even try. And it doesn’t seem a passing phase either- hit 130 2 months ago and stuck between 120 and 125 since I reached it. How ironic.

A “licensed therapist “ia someone that took this proffesion to solve personal problems .
Maybe you have to protect yourself with this recomandetion , and maybe there is some real good ” Licensed..” but to get out you have to get into the core , and the way is by finding anviorenment of pressure to help get the shit out ,not someone that pass the tissue on demand .
And the Q is :how can one make self think he ate what he know he didn’t ?

I know that changing one’s mind set is important, I was diagnosed with PTSD several years ago and that in itself was very debilitating to say the least, when I had an episode it was almost like having a mild stroke.  Many regular doctors didn’t diagnose this problem and one even suggested I go on EpilepsyMmedication.  After reading a story written by a returned Australian Soldier Vietnam Veteran, who actually described the symptoms exactly the same as mine I went to see a Psycologist, wh0 implanted several suggestions that have relieved my condition completely. PTSD is a thing of the past, all I need to do now is get my mind around “not eating’, I remember reading an article about eating less and living  longer, the only problem with that is always feeling hungry…..especially around meal times, so I guess its the old story of shutting down that response and doing what I know I should do, I’ll have to seek out another psycologist and get a mind fix………..?

  • Kay

I have tried at every diet there is and failed, sometimes quickly sometimes slowly, but always failed and I have been feeling very down.  Then another ad for weight loss came through on the internet and I decided to give it another go, but this one was different, it was about training the mind to believe that I could lose fat and wanted to lose fat and I am losing fat.  After four weeks on this porgram I can see clearly that all the attempts failed because I did not believe I could do it, and the more I failed the more I believed I could not do it.  I am slowly moving my mindset and can see that this is the first thing anyone should do.  Then today I read this artlice and it makes perfect sense.  We know that the mind is a powerful thing. we have read about people curing themselves of cancers and the like, why not of obestiy.  Lets enjoy eating and believe we can lose weight and enjoy ourselves

    Hi,

I am a type 1 diabetic and have gone out of control. I eat the cakes and then take my shots but get spikes high and lows. I crave these foods coz I have become a little irritated and despondent. I know I am indulging and yet after I ate that cake, I still want more! Any advice on how your theory can apply to me, thanks!!

The piece that is missing in terms of overeating is guilt. When one feels that they have overindulged, the feeling of guilt can be crushing, the person feels worse and is driven to the default behavior in order to feel better. Hence, this notion may not be helpful for those trapped in the maddening cycle of overeating/guilt and that leads to the continuation of the hated behavior.
